This is a class taught by well-known folk dance teacher and caller Madeleine Smith, started by Madeleine and Jenny Stothard in 2009 in response to Jenny's request to learn the dances of Jane Austen's time. We are now a lively, friendly, established group, who welcome beginners, and have widened our scope to include all styles, though the name ‘Jane Austen dancers’ seems to have stuck! Dances are taught thoroughly, not just called, with tips on how to dance them well. There are opportunities to dance out at small local events for those who wish to, and to ‘perform’ in a very light-hearted way at Madeleine's talks on the history of folk dance. We generally use canned music, with occasional live music. We ran a Jane Austen ball on small scale in 2011, and invited local clubs to our Ball in July 2012, held in a sumptuous marquee in Lacey Green.
